The Shocking Irony of Israel’s 75th Anniversary Year
This anniversary year was marked by a sense among many of us that Israel’s founding values were being upended. We expressed dismay but essentially averted our gaze elsewhere — America’s political chaos, the war in Ukraine — and then literally in a matter of hours, everything about Israel changed.
As it happens, my wife and I were en route to Taiwan for a short visit, with my intention to ask what it feels like to live in a prosperous democracy in a tough neighborhood. That question suddenly seems if not more urgent, then certainly very relevant.
I’m planning to write about this when I have something worth sharing. In the meantime, remembering to factor in the unexpected when imagining the future course of events seems, again, to be especially sound counsel.
